It Wasn't the Child's Fault

I once knew a woman whose 3 year old daughter did not always come when called.  More than once the conversation went like this:

"Mary."
No answer

"Mary."
No answer

"Mary!"
"Yes ma'am."  Mary replied as she came around the house from the backyard.

"Why didn't you come when I called you."

"I didn't hear you til the third time."

Question:  If she didn't hear until the third time, how did she know there were two other times?
